Mulled Wine

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine (750 ml)
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 lemon, sliced into rounds
  • 8-10 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 2-4 tablespoons of sugar or honey

Directions

  1. Pour the wine into a large pot. Add the orange and lemon slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Stir in the sugar or honey.
  2. Warm the mixture over low heat, ensuring not to let it boil. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Simmer for 20-25 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  3. Remove from heat, strain out the spices and fruit if desired, or leave them in for visual appeal.
  4. Serve warm in mugs or heat-resistant glasses and garnish with an extra slice of orange or a cinnamon stick if you like.

Notes

  • Mulled wine is also known as Glühwein (in Germany) and Glögg (in Sweden & surrounding countries).
  • Mulled wine is originally a Roman drink but it’s most popular in the UK and Germany during Christmas markets.
  • Optionally, add brandy or orange liqueur for extra kick after straining the wine in step 3.
