Salisbury Steak

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into an oval patty about 3/4 inch thick.
  3. Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during cooking.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add the chilled patties to the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  6. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add 1 medium onion, thinly sliced, and 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms. Sauté until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour over the vegetables and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute, then slowly pour in 2 cups of beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  8. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over them. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through and meld the flavors.
  10. Serve the Salisbury steak hot, with the gravy spooned over the top. Accompany with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete meal.

Additional Notes

  • Salisbury steak offers flexibility in ingredients. Some variations include using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, adding different herbs like thyme or rosemary, or incorporating cheese into the patties for a unique flavor.
  • Pair Salisbury steak with sides such as green beans, carrots, or a salad to balance the meal. For a complete dining experience, serve it with a glass of red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
